Biography

Cecilia Tan is a poet living in the Netherlands. She writes what she cannot say out loud, and the craft, for her, is finding the most honest shape for a feeling too large to hold in the mouth. Her work moves between lyric poetry and verse drama. Love’s Reckoning gathers four movements of a single reckoning — the bloom, the kingdom, the light changing, and the aftermath. The Demolition of Love extends that reckoning into a five-act tragedy for the stage, and Hamlet Reimagined answers Shakespeare directly through five soliloquies of Gijsbert, Prince of Almere. She is the mother of a daughter, Emma, whose voice runs through the work like a counter-melody. The poems were written in the hour after her daughter sleeps — what she calls “the dark I write in.”
